About Rome
Fiumicino is where every ITA Airways intercontinental route begins, because the airline flies nothing long-haul out of any other Italian airport. Delta and United add North Atlantic frequencies alongside Air Canada, Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways run the Gulf, and Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and ITA's own Tokyo Haneda service carry the Asian end of the map. Qantas adds a seasonal nonstop to Perth.
Terminal 1 handles Schengen and domestic departures. Terminal 3, which absorbed the old Terminal 5, takes everything outside the Schengen area, so it is where the widebodies board. ITA runs its Piazza di Spagna lounges airside in boarding areas A and E, open 06:00 to 23:00, with live cooking, a staffed bar, showers and a quiet room. Plaza Premium and contract lounges cover the rest of Terminal 3.
ITA Airways joined Star Alliance on 1 April 2026, having left SkyTeam the year before, which put Fiumicino inside the same network as United, Air Canada, Lufthansa and Swiss and opened Star lounge access across both terminals. Lufthansa Group holds 41 per cent of the airline with options on the rest. On the ground the airport feeds straight onto Trenitalia's high-speed spine at Termini and Tiburtina.
Rome rewards slow walking more than a checklist. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon sit within twenty minutes of each other on foot, while the Vatican Museums and St Peter's are a separate half-day across the Tiber. Beyond the monuments it is a neighbourhood city (Monti, Trastevere, Testaccio, Prati) where dinner starts late and the best rooms are trattorie with eight tables.
Best time to visit
April to early June and mid-September to October: warm, long days, thinner crowds. July and August regularly top 33°C and many Roman businesses close around Ferragosto on 15 August.

Which terminal do long-haul flights use at Fiumicino?
Terminal 3 handles all non-Schengen and intercontinental departures, including ITA Airways' widebodies and the Gulf, Asian and North American carriers. Terminal 1 is Schengen and domestic only, and also home to ITA's short-haul operation. Terminal 3 absorbed the old Terminal 5. Assignments shift with the schedule, so the boarding pass and the airport screens are the reliable check.

The Leonardo Express runs nonstop to Roma Termini in 32 minutes for €14, roughly every 15 minutes.
