About Amsterdam
Schiphol is KLM's global hub and one of Europe's largest airports, expecting more than 12.7 million passengers between 3 July and 30 August 2026 alone. KLM's long-haul network reaches North America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia, with SkyTeam partners Delta and Air France feeding the same connecting banks, while Transavia and easyJet dominate short-haul leisure flying out of the same building.
The airport is a single terminal split into departure halls 1, 2 and 3, with piers B through H feeding one connected airside. KLM's Crown Lounge 52 sits between piers E and F in the non-Schengen zone: 6,800 square metres over two floors, a runway-view terrace, Blue by KLM dining, around 20 showers and paid sleeping cabins. Crown Lounge 25 covers Schengen departures.
Schiphol is KLM's only hub, so the entire widebody operation banks through this one building: the airline's own long-haul network reaches around 70 intercontinental destinations, and foreign carriers add their own. Nonstop block times run roughly 7 to 11 hours to North America, 6 to 7 hours to the Gulf, 11 to 13 hours to East and Southeast Asia, close to 11 hours to Johannesburg and about 12 hours to Sao Paulo. Australia has no nonstop from Schiphol, so those itineraries connect in Asia or the Gulf.
Amsterdam works best as a European gateway rather than a one-city trip. Schiphol Plaza puts you on intercity trains to Rotterdam, Brussels, Antwerp and the German border without leaving the building, and Eurostar runs from Amsterdam Centraal to London. Note that Dutch departure tax is EUR 30.25 per passenger in 2026, with distance-based bands legislated to start on 1 January 2027.

April and May for tulip season, with Keukenhof open roughly late March to mid-May; September and October for mild weather and thinner crowds. December to February is cold, dark and wet.

Do I need a visa or ETIAS for the Netherlands?
It depends on the passport you hold. Many nationalities enter the Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; others must apply for a short-stay Schengen visa before travelling, and the official Dutch guidance sits at netherlandsworldwide.nl. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational, so expect fingerprints and a facial image at the Schiphol border instead of a stamp. ETIAS is not in operation and the EU has not published a start date.
How do I get from Schiphol to central Amsterdam?
Trains leave from Schiphol Plaza station directly beneath the terminal, reaching Amsterdam Centraal in roughly 15 to 20 minutes with up to six departures an hour. A one-way second-class ticket is around EUR 7 including the single-use chipcard, or tap a contactless card using OVpay. Taxis take 25 to 40 minutes for around EUR 45 to 60.
How does connecting through Schiphol actually work?
Schiphol is one terminal with three departure halls sharing a single connected airside, so transfers rarely mean changing buildings. Hall 1 feeds piers B, C and D, Hall 2 feeds D and E, and Hall 3 feeds F, G and the walled-off H and M piers used by low-cost carriers. The Schengen and non-Schengen split is where passport control and EES registration happen.
Which airlines fly long-haul out of Schiphol?
KLM is the hub carrier, with around 70 intercontinental destinations, and SkyTeam partners including Delta, Air France, Kenya Airways and China Southern feed the same connecting banks. Foreign widebodies fill in the rest: Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad reach the Gulf in about 6 to 7 hours, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific and EVA Air reach East and Southeast Asia in 11 to 13, and Delta, United and Air Canada cross the Atlantic in 7 to 11. Australia has no nonstop from Schiphol, so those trips connect in Asia or the Gulf.
