About Istanbul
Istanbul Airport is Turkish Airlines' home base and the busiest airport in Europe by flight movements, running more than 1,700 departures a day across roughly 116 scheduled carriers. Turkish Airlines alone reaches over 100 European destinations from here, plus dense networks into the Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Pegasus and most low-cost traffic use Sabiha Gokcen on the Asian side instead.
The terminal is one enormous building with five concourses radiating from a central hub: A, B, D and F handle international flights, G handles domestic, and transfers are walked rather than shuttled. Turkish Airlines' flagship Business Lounge sits opposite Gate E1 with live cooking stations, private suite rooms, showers, a cinema and golf simulators. Star Alliance Gold members travelling in economy use the Miles&Smiles lounge opposite Gate C1.
Turkish Airlines operates almost every widebody route out of Istanbul, and the airport as a whole is scheduled to more than 300 nonstop destinations across about 100 airlines. Block times run roughly 10 to 14 hours to North America, 9 to 11 to East Asia, 7 to 9 to sub-Saharan Africa, 12 to 14 to South America and about 4 to the Gulf. Australia is the one long-haul region still reached with a stop: the Sydney service routes through Kuala Lumpur and the Melbourne service through Singapore, with specially configured Airbus A350-1000s due to fly nonstop by the end of 2027.
Istanbul earns its place when Europe is not the only destination. One connection here opens Athens, Tbilisi, Cairo, Baku, Yerevan and dozens of secondary Anatolian and Balkan cities that would otherwise need two changes. Turkey's 90-day visa-free entry for a long list of nationalities also makes a stopover of a few days genuinely painless, and the airport's fourth runway and terminal expansion are lifting capacity toward 120 million passengers a year.

Turkey's visa-free list covers a long roster of nationalities for 90 days in any 180-day period; everyone else buys an e-Visa at evisa.gov.tr before travelling. Either way, your passport needs at least 60 days' validity beyond the permitted stay.

Do I need a visa for Turkey?
It depends on the passport you hold. Turkey exempts a long list of nationalities from visas for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for tourism or transit. Everyone else applies online through the official e-Visa portal at evisa.gov.tr, which covers tourism and trade only, work, study and residence visas go through a Turkish embassy or consulate. Either way your passport must be valid for at least 60 days beyond the end of the permitted stay, so 150 days from arrival for a 90-day entry. How do I get from Istanbul Airport into the city?
The M11 metro leaves from terminal level -2 and reaches Gayrettepe in about 35 minutes for roughly 38 lira with an Istanbulkart, with a transfer at Gayrettepe or Kagithane for onward lines. It does not run overnight. Havaist coaches serve Taksim, Aksaray and other points 24 hours a day, and metered orange taxis take 50 to 70 minutes off-peak.
Does Turkish Airlines fly nonstop between Istanbul and Australia?
Not yet. Australia is the one long-haul region out of Istanbul still reached with a stop: the Sydney service routes through Kuala Lumpur and the Melbourne service through Singapore, with passengers leaving the aircraft at the stopover while it is cleaned. Nonstop flights on specially configured Airbus A350-1000s, fitted with 66 Crystal business suites and lightened for the 17-hour sectors, have been pushed back to the end of 2027 for Sydney and 2028 for Melbourne. Every other long-haul region (North America, East Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and South America) is already nonstop.
What is Turkish Airlines business class like out of Istanbul?
The airline is rolling out its in-house Crystal suite, a 1-2-1 Safran Unity-based seat with high walls, a sliding door, a 22-inch screen, wireless charging and a fully flat bed. It debuted on the Boeing 777 fleet and is spreading through the widebodies. Before departure, business passengers use the flagship lounge opposite Gate E1 with live cooking stations, showers and private suites.
