About London
Heathrow handled 84.5 million passengers in 2025, its busiest year on record, and remains the most connected hub in Europe: roughly 89 airlines flying to 214 destinations across 84 countries. North America is the single biggest long-haul market (New York alone accounts for more than three million passengers a year), with the Gulf, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, southern Africa and South America all reachable nonstop.
Terminal 3 holds the Qantas London Lounge plus Cathay Pacific's business and first lounges, so oneworld premium passengers have real choice. Terminal 5 is British Airways and Iberia only, with the Galleries lounges and the Concorde Room. Terminal 2 serves Star Alliance including Singapore Airlines; Terminal 4 covers SkyTeam plus Qatar Airways, Etihad and Malaysia Airlines.
Heathrow is a connecting airport as much as a destination, and the transfer rules matter. Passengers who stay airside and never clear UK passport control are exempt from the ETA; anyone who passes through border control needs one, or a visa. Changing terminals means re-clearing security, so allow time between flights.
Heathrow works as the start of a longer trip as much as an end point, because it connects onward almost everywhere and the Elizabeth line puts the airport 30 minutes from Paddington. A £1.3 billion investment programme began in 2026, covering a Terminal 4 revamp, a new Terminal 2 baggage system rated at 31,000 bags a day, and next-generation security scanners across all four terminals.

Worth knowing before you fly
The UK ETA costs £20 and lasts two years. Anyone clearing UK passport control needs one, or a visa if their nationality is not eligible for an ETA; the Home Office exempts Heathrow and Manchester airside transit passengers who never pass border control.
Common questions
Do I need a UK ETA to transit through Heathrow?
If you clear UK passport control you need an ETA, which costs £20 and covers multiple visits over two years, or a visitor visa if your nationality is not eligible for one. The Home Office exempts passengers transiting airside at Heathrow and Manchester who never pass through passport control. Rules can change, so check gov.uk/eta and confirm with your airline before you fly.
Which Heathrow terminal do flights to Australia leave from?
Qantas and Cathay Pacific use Terminal 3, alongside Virgin Atlantic and most oneworld carriers. British Airways operates from Terminal 5 with Iberia. Singapore Airlines and the rest of Star Alliance sit in Terminal 2, while Qatar Airways, Etihad and Malaysia Airlines use Terminal 4. Check the departure board on the day, since assignments occasionally change.
What is the fastest way from Heathrow to central London?
Heathrow Express reaches Paddington in about 15 minutes from Terminals 2 and 3, around 21 from Terminal 5, with advance tickets from about £10 and walk-up singles around £26. The Elizabeth line takes roughly 30 minutes to Paddington for about £15.50 contactless and continues to Bond Street, Farringdon and Liverpool Street. The Piccadilly line costs around £5.90 and takes about 50 minutes.
Can you fly nonstop between Heathrow and Australia?
One route is built for it. Qantas QF9 links Heathrow with Perth on a Boeing 787-9, scheduled at about 17 and a half hours, and it flew nonstop from March 2018. Since March 2026 it has operated via a fuel stop in Singapore after Middle East airspace closures forced longer routings, and Qantas has described that stop as temporary and under review, so check the routing on the specific date you are booking. Sydney and Melbourne have no nonstop yet: Qantas has confirmed October 2027 for its Project Sunrise services, flown by the Airbus A350-1000ULR with first delivery due April 2027 and a block time of around 22 hours. Every other Heathrow to Australia itinerary connects, most often through Singapore, Dubai, Doha, Hong Kong or Kuala Lumpur.
