About Munich

Munich is Lufthansa's second hub and handled 43.4 million passengers in 2025, up 4.4 percent. Terminal 2 and its satellite, run as a joint venture between the airport and Lufthansa, hold Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners, and Singapore Airlines lifts Munich to ten weekly flights from October 2026. Terminal 1 takes Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Cathay Pacific, Delta and American, and gained a 95,000 square metre pier on 13 April 2026.

Munich placed ninth in the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards and took Best Airport in Central Europe. Lufthansa's ten Allegris-fitted A350-900s are based here, carrying the new business class and a three-suite first cabin. The First Class Lounge sits in Terminal 2 between gates G21 and H21 with its own passport control, a cigar room and Porsche transfers to remote stands; a second, larger one sits in the satellite.

Long-haul flying out of Munich splits across two campuses. Star Alliance widebodies leave from Terminal 2 and its satellite, linked airside by an underground people mover, so a Lufthansa or Singapore Airlines connection stays on one side of the airport. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Cathay Pacific, Delta and American work out of Terminal 1, and changing between the two means crossing the Munich Airport Center. Nonstop reach covers North America, the Gulf, South and East Asia, southern Africa and Sao Paulo; Australia, New Zealand and most of Latin America connect once, through Asia, the Gulf or a North American gateway.

Munich earns its place when Bavaria, Austria or northern Italy is the real destination. The Hauptbahnhof feeds ICE services to Nuremberg, Frankfurt and Vienna, and regional trains reach Salzburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the Bavarian castles in a morning. Oktoberfest runs 19 September to 4 October 2026, and the winter ski season makes Munich a sensible arrival point for the Tyrol and the Dolomites.

Best time to visit

May to early October for beer gardens and Alpine day trips; late September for Oktoberfest, which runs 19 September to 4 October 2026; late November and December for the Christkindlmarkt.

Common questions

Do I need a visa or ETIAS for Germany?

Germany is in the Schengen area, so the ceiling is 90 days in any 180-day period. Many nationalities enter visa-free on a valid passport; the rest apply for a Schengen short-stay visa at a German mission before travelling. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational, so expect facial image and fingerprint capture at the Munich border instead of a stamp. The ETIAS travel authorisation for visa-free nationalities is due to follow, with the start date published by the European Commission. Check your own case at auswaertiges-amt.de/en/visa-service.

What is the fastest way from Munich Airport into the city?

The S1 and S8 run from beneath the Munich Airport Center and reach Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz in roughly 40 to 45 minutes, every 20 minutes on each line. A single airport ticket is around EUR 12 and the Airport-City-Day-Ticket around EUR 16. The Lufthansa Express Bus takes about 45 minutes to Hauptbahnhof, costs around EUR 12 booked online, and is open to passengers of any airline.

Which Munich terminal will I use, and how do I connect between them?

Star Alliance long-haul uses Terminal 2 and its satellite, reached by an underground people mover, so Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines connections stay on one campus. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Cathay Pacific, Delta and American use Terminal 1, which opened a new 95,000 square metre pier on 13 April 2026. Changing terminals means crossing the Munich Airport Center, so allow extra time.

Can I fly Lufthansa's Allegris business class out of Munich?

Munich is the base for Lufthansa's ten Allegris-fitted A350-900s, which carry the new business class plus a three-suite first cabin. In summer 2026 those aircraft work Munich routes including Tokyo Haneda, Shanghai, Bangalore, Chicago, New York JFK, Newark and San Diego. Aircraft assignments change constantly, so check the seat map for your exact date rather than assuming the route.
