About Frankfurt
Frankfurt handled 63.2 million passengers in 2025, up 2.6 percent, serving 301 destinations in 96 countries on 94 airlines. Lufthansa's largest hub occupies Terminal 1 with its Star Alliance partners, including Singapore Airlines, which has flown the A380 daily on SQ325/326 between Singapore and Frankfurt since late March 2026. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad, Cathay Pacific, Air France, KLM and Delta all moved to the new Terminal 3 during 2026.
Terminal 3 opened to passengers on 23 April 2026 after roughly four billion euros of investment, with piers G, H and J, 21 CT-scanner security lanes and SkyTeam, Emirates and Priority lounges. Terminal 1 keeps Lufthansa's standalone First Class Terminal, open daily 05:30 to 22:00 to First Class and HON Circle passengers, plus First Class, Senator and Business lounges spread across concourses A, B, C and Z.
The long-haul banks are what the terminals are built around. North America is eight to nine hours away at New York and eleven to twelve on the US West Coast, flown by Lufthansa alongside United, Delta, Air Canada and American Airlines. The Gulf sits at six to seven hours, with Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad running their own metal into Frankfurt; South Asia is roughly eight; and East and Southeast Asia are eleven to thirteen, where Singapore Airlines, ANA, Japan Airlines, Korean Air and China Airlines join Lufthansa. Africa reaches Cairo, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Johannesburg and Cape Town nonstop, and South America runs as far as Buenos Aires. Star Alliance itineraries stay in Terminal 1, while Gulf, SkyTeam and oneworld carriers use Terminal 3, linked to Terminal 1 by the SkyLine people mover. Nothing flies nonstop between Frankfurt and Australia, so those trips take one stop.
Frankfurt earns its place when you want Germany's rail network as much as the city. The long-distance Fernbahnhof sits beside Terminal 1 with ICE and IC services across Germany and into neighbouring countries, and Lufthansa Express Rail sells train legs from 17 German cities under a flight number with baggage handled at the AIRail check-in. The Book Fair runs 7 to 11 October 2026.
Best time to visit
May to September for the Main riverside, Museumsufer and Rhine Valley day trips; the Frankfurt Book Fair runs 7 to 11 October 2026; the Christmas market runs 23 November to 22 December 2026.

Common questions
Do I need a visa or ETIAS for Germany?
It depends on the passport you hold. Many nationalities get up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the Schengen area without a visa; others need a short-stay Schengen visa arranged before travel, and the German Federal Foreign Office runs a visa navigator at auswaertiges-amt.de/en/visa-service. Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System has been fully operational, so expect facial image and fingerprint capture at the Frankfurt border instead of a stamp. ETIAS, the separate travel authorisation for visa-exempt nationalities, has not opened; the EU publishes its status at travel-europe.europa.eu.
Has Frankfurt's Terminal 3 opened, and which terminal will I use?
Yes. Terminal 3 opened to passengers on 23 April 2026 with piers G, H and J, and all 57 airlines that had used Terminal 2 relocated in four waves by 9 June 2026, when Terminal 2 closed. Lufthansa and its Star Alliance partners stay in Terminal 1. Condor is scheduled to move to Terminal 3 in summer 2027.
What is the fastest way from Frankfurt Airport into the city?
The S8 and S9 leave from the Regionalbahnhof beneath Terminal 1 and reach Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof in roughly 12 to 15 minutes, about every 15 minutes. A single RMV ticket is around EUR 6.90 and a day ticket around EUR 13.50. A taxi takes 20 to 30 minutes for roughly EUR 30 to 45, and Uber picks up at car park P31.
Can I fly Lufthansa's Allegris business class out of Frankfurt?
Yes, on the Boeing 787-9. Nine Allegris 787-9s are Frankfurt-based, and the full business cabin went on sale for travel from 15 April 2026 on routes including Austin, Bogota, Cape Town, Hong Kong, Rio de Janeiro, Shanghai, Hyderabad, Los Angeles, New York JFK and Delhi. Allegris first class remains Munich-only on the A350. Check the seat map for your date.
