About Los Angeles
LAX flies nonstop to 183 destinations on 69 airlines and carries one of the highest shares of origin-and-destination traffic of any large United States airport, most passengers start or end their trip here rather than connecting through. American, Delta and United all run hubs along the terminal horseshoe and Alaska Airlines bases here, while the long-haul foreign carriers work from Tom Bradley. Europe is 10 to 13 hours nonstop, Northeast Asia 11 to 16, Singapore and the Gulf 15 to 18, and the South Pacific 13 to 16.
Qantas, Air New Zealand and roughly forty other long-haul carriers use the Tom Bradley International Terminal, Terminal B, extended by the West Gates satellite concourse. Upstairs sit the Qantas First Lounge and the shared oneworld business lounge operated with British Airways and Cathay Pacific, refitted during 2026 in a coastal Californian style with 570 seats, more power outlets and its original 1960s fire pit.
Every international arrival clears United States immigration and customs at LAX, even when continuing onward, so allow at least three hours: facial biometrics, bag reclaim, customs, then recheck and a second security screening for the domestic leg. Connecting to American means Terminal 4, to Delta the Sky Way across Terminals 2 and 3, and to United Terminals 7 and 8, all reachable airside from Tom Bradley.
LAX makes sense when the west coast is the destination or the springboard, with onward flights to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Mexico and Latin America. For the east coast or Europe, routing through Dallas, Chicago or New York is often shorter door to door. The airport is mid-rebuild ahead of the 2028 Olympics, so build in buffer either way.
Best time to visit
March to May and September to November; late May and June bring the coastal 'June gloom' marine layer, and inland valleys are hot in July and August.

Which terminal does Qantas use at LAX?
Qantas uses the Tom Bradley International Terminal, signed as Terminal B, alongside Air New Zealand and around forty other long-haul carriers. Business-class passengers use the shared oneworld lounge run with British Airways and Cathay Pacific, refitted in 2026, and first class has its own Qantas lounge. Both sit upstairs in Tom Bradley.
Can you get from LAX into Los Angeles without a car?
Yes. A free LAWA shuttle runs every 10 minutes from every terminal to the LAX/Metro Transit Center, which opened on 6 June 2025 on the Metro C and K Lines. Metro fares are US$1.75 with two hours of free transfers. FlyAway coaches also run to Union Station and Van Nuys.
How long are the long-haul flights out of LAX?
Europe runs 10 to 13 hours nonstop, Northeast Asia 11 to 16, and the South Pacific 13 to 16. The longest is Singapore Airlines to Changi at about 17 hours 40 minutes, with Emirates to Dubai and Qatar Airways to Doha both around 16 hours 20. Eastbound legs back into LAX are usually shorter, with the jetstream behind them.
