About Hanoi
Vietnam Airlines runs Noi Bai as its northern hub, a SkyTeam member since 2010, flying the A350-900 and Boeing 787 on long haul. It added Amsterdam on 16 June 2026 as its eighth European destination from Hanoi, and lifted Hanoi–Sydney and Hanoi–Melbourne to four weekly each from 29 March 2026. Vietjet and the other low-cost carriers cover Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and India from Noi Bai with narrowbodies, while Bamboo Airways has retrenched to a small domestic operation.
Terminal 1 handles domestic flights; Terminal 2 handles all international traffic. The expanded T2 opened on 19 December 2025 after an 18-month, roughly US$200 million build, lifting capacity from 10 to 15 million passengers a year and taking boarding gates from 17 to 30. It added self-service kiosks, automated bag drop, biometric immigration lanes and 3D cabin-bag screening. Vietnam Airlines' Lotus Lounge serves business class.
The long-haul flying out of Noi Bai is almost all Vietnam Airlines: Europe in roughly 11h 30m to 13h, Sydney and Melbourne in about nine and a half hours. Qatar Airways reaches Doha and Etihad reaches Abu Dhabi in around seven. There is no nonstop to North America, so those itineraries route through a Northeast Asian or Gulf hub. Noi Bai is the practical entry point for Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Sapa and Ha Giang. Connecting to a domestic flight means moving from T2 to T1, separate buildings linked by a short walk and free shuttle.
Hanoi works as an origin when you want northern Vietnam as a base rather than a single-city stop, or when you are building a longer Asia itinerary. Vietnam Airlines flies nonstop from Hanoi to London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Milan, Copenhagen and Moscow, plus dense Northeast Asian coverage to Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei and Hong Kong, so the city can anchor a Europe or Japan trip without doubling back through a bigger megahub.

Worth knowing before you fly
Vietnam requires a visa from most nationalities: a limited exemption list covers stays of 14 to 90 days, and everyone else applies for an e-visa. Apply only at the government portal evisa.gov.vn, up to 90 days, US$25 single entry or US$50 multiple, around three working days. Ignore the many lookalike sites.
Common questions
Do I need a visa for Vietnam?
It depends on the passport you hold. Vietnam waives visas for a limited list of nationalities, for stays of 14 to 90 days depending on the country; Australia, Canada and the United States are not on that list. Everyone else applies for an e-visa, which is open to all countries and territories: up to 90 days, single entry US$25 or multiple entry US$50, processing about three working days. Apply only at evisa.gov.vn or evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, countless lookalike sites charge large mark-ups, and the government portals are the only official ones.
How do I get from Noi Bai airport into central Hanoi?
Express bus 86 links both terminals with Hanoi Railway Station for around 45,000 VND, taking roughly 45 to 60 minutes and running every 25 to 30 minutes from early morning to late evening. A metered taxi to the Old Quarter is usually 300,000 to 450,000 VND and Grab a little less. There is no airport rail link.
Which airlines fly long-haul from Hanoi?
Vietnam Airlines operates almost all of it, sending A350-900s and 787s to eight European cities: London, Paris, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Milan, Copenhagen and Moscow, and to Sydney and Melbourne, four weekly each since 29 March 2026. Amsterdam launched on 16 June 2026. Qatar Airways serves Doha and Etihad serves Abu Dhabi. There is no nonstop to North America, so those trips connect through a Northeast Asian or Gulf hub.
Is Hanoi's Noi Bai airport getting a new terminal?
The expanded Terminal 2 opened on 19 December 2025, taking international capacity from 10 to 15 million passengers a year with 30 boarding gates and 27 jet bridges. A further Terminal 3 is planned to the airport's south under a long-term masterplan. Separately, Hanoi broke ground on 22 June 2026 on five metro lines, two of which are routed to Noi Bai, with a substantially-complete target of 2030.
