About Hong Kong
Cathay Pacific anchors Hong Kong International, flying to around 80 nonstop destinations of its own and running widebodies to North America, Europe, the Gulf, Johannesburg and Australia. Around 140 airlines serve more than 220 destinations from HKIA, so a single Hong Kong stop opens London, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan, mainland China and most of Southeast Asia.
The three-runway system was commissioned on 28 November 2024, and the expanded Terminal 2 departures hall opened on 27 May 2026 with smart self-service check-in and facial-recognition security gates. T2 has no gates of its own, so you ride the Automated People Mover to Terminal 1. From there the 200-metre Sky Bridge, high enough for an A380 to taxi beneath, walks you to the T1 Satellite Concourse.
Cathay's Hong Kong lounges are a real reason to route this way. The Wing, First reopened on 22 April 2026 on the east side of Terminal 1 with seven private massage booths, an a la carte Dining Room and a fully enclosed workspace. The Pier and the redesigned Bridge round out the line-up; The Wing, Business is shut for renovation and is due back in 2027.
Hong Kong makes sense when you want one stop instead of two. The Airport Authority runs free guided city tours for transfer passengers with layovers of seven hours or more, and Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in about 24 minutes, so even a half-day gap is genuinely usable rather than dead time.
Best time to visit

Common questions
Do I need a visa for Hong Kong?
It depends on your nationality. The Hong Kong Immigration Department lets most passport holders visit visa-free, for 7, 14, 30, 90 or 180 days depending on the passport, and everyone else applies for a visit visa or entry permit before travel. A few nationalities, India among them, first complete a free online pre-arrival registration. Visitors do not have to fill in arrival or departure cards, and you cannot work or study on a visitor entry. Check your own case at immd.gov.hk.
What is the fastest way from HKG into the city?
Airport Express reaches Hong Kong Station in roughly 24 minutes, with Kowloon a few minutes earlier and trains around every 10 minutes; adult single fares sit near HK$115-130. Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Hong Kong Airlines and Singapore Airlines passengers can also check in and drop bags in town at Hong Kong or Kowloon station.
Which taxi should I take at the airport?
Hong Kong colour-codes its taxis by zone. Red urban taxis cover Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories and are the ones you want for Central or Tsim Sha Tsui; green taxis are restricted to the New Territories and blue taxis only run on Lantau. Expect roughly HK$300-400 into town, plus tunnel tolls and luggage charges.
Is Hong Kong a good connection point to Europe?
It works well. Around 140 airlines fly from HKIA to more than 220 destinations, and Cathay Pacific, British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa and KLM all run nonstops to Europe in roughly 13 to 15 hours. The Airport Authority also runs free guided Hong Kong tours for transfer passengers with layovers of at least seven hours, so a long connection can become a genuine half-day in the city.

Typhoon season runs roughly May to November and HKIA suspends operations under higher typhoon signals, as it did in late July 2026. Leave a buffer before onward European connections.
