About Osaka
Kansai is western Japan's long-haul gateway. Europe is reachable nonstop on Finnair to Helsinki, Air France to Paris, KLM to Amsterdam, Lufthansa to Munich and Turkish Airlines to Istanbul. Three Gulf carriers serve it: Emirates daily to Dubai, Qatar Airways to Doha, Etihad to Abu Dhabi. Across the Pacific, United flies San Francisco, Japan Airlines Los Angeles and Honolulu, and Air Canada Vancouver and Toronto.
Terminal 1 finished a five-year renovation on 2 June 2026, ending with an international departure zone about 1.6 times its old floor area and two dozen new shops. Japan Airlines keeps its Sakura Lounge in the south wing. Kansai Airports runs two shared lounges past immigration, KIX Lounge Premium and KIX Lounge Kansai, after ANA closed its own lounge on 31 May 2025.
Two runways and curfew-free operation let Kansai take overnight departures the Tokyo airports cannot. Peach uses Terminal 2 as its base for domestic and international low-cost flying, and the renovated domestic side reopened on 1 April 2026. Onward, the Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka reaches Tokyo in about two and a half hours, and the Haruka runs straight through to Kyoto.
Osaka is Japan's kitchen and its blunter, funnier second city. Dotonbori's neon and takoyaki stalls run late; Kuromon Ichiba sells the raw material by day. Osaka Castle and Sumiyoshi Taisha carry the history, Universal Studios Japan the crowds. Kyoto and Nara are both under an hour away by train, which makes the city a workable base for the whole Kansai region.
Best time to visit
March to May and October to November: mild and mostly dry, with cherry blossom in spring and autumn colour in the second window. The rainy season runs mid-June to mid-July, August is hot and humid, and typhoon risk peaks August to September.

Common questions
How do you get from Kansai Airport into central Osaka?
Both rail operators run from under Terminal 1. Nankai's Rapi:t limited express reaches Namba in 34-37 minutes for ¥1,490, and its Airport Express does the same trip in about 44 minutes for ¥970. JR's Haruka limited express serves Tennoji, Shin-Osaka and Kyoto. A taxi is around ¥15,000-20,000 and takes 45-60 minutes.
Which terminal do international flights use at Kansai Airport?
Terminal 1 handles almost all international services, including the long-haul widebodies, plus most domestic flights. Terminal 2 is Peach's base and has separate domestic and international wings, linked to Terminal 1 by a free shuttle bus. Terminal 1's five-year renovation was completed on 2 June 2026, and Terminal 2's domestic area reopened on 1 April 2026.
Does Japan require a visa for a short visit?
It depends on where the passport was issued. Japan has visa exemption arrangements with around 70 countries and regions, allowing stays of up to 90 days without a visa; other nationalities apply, and a Japan eVisa covers some of them. The official list sits on mofa.go.jp. Everyone completes Visit Japan Web before arrival.
What is Japan's international tourist tax?
A departure levy charged on nearly everyone leaving Japan by air or sea, whatever passport they hold. It rose from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per person on 1 July 2026. Carriers add it to the ticket price rather than collecting it at the gate. Children under two and transit passengers leaving within 24 hours are exempt.
