About Tokyo
Haneda is Japan's busiest airport and the closer of Tokyo's two gateways, with around 100 nonstop destinations in roughly 26 countries on about 45 airlines. ANA and Japan Airlines fly most of the widebodies, joined by British Airways, Air France, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, ITA Airways, United, Delta, Air Canada, American Airlines, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Qantas. Slot limits keep the international list shorter than Narita's, so the network concentrates on East Asia, North America, Western Europe, the Gulf and Australia.
Terminal 3 is the main international building, opened in 2010, with the Edo Koji shopping street, an observation deck and the Haneda Airport Garden complex attached. Its fourth-floor lounges include the JAL First Class Lounge, the JAL Sakura Lounge with its Sky View section upstairs, ANA's Suite Lounge and ANA Lounge, plus Cathay Pacific and Delta facilities.
ANA also flies internationally from Terminal 2, its domestic base, which puts London, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Singapore, Sydney, Honolulu and New York services alongside the domestic gates. Free shuttle buses circle the three terminals every four to eight minutes, and transferring passengers can collect free Keikyu or Monorail transit tickets by showing a passport and boarding pass.
Haneda suits anyone whose trip centres on Tokyo. It sits roughly 15 km from Tokyo Station against Narita's 60-plus, the Keikyu Line reaches Shinagawa in eleven to fourteen minutes, and the airport operates around the clock. Narita carries a wider spread of low-cost and long-haul carriers, and plenty of routes serve only one of the two airports, so the pair split by itinerary rather than by quality.
Best time to visit

| Entry requirements | Japan has reciprocal visa-exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions: most cover short stays of up to 90 days, with Brunei and Qatar at 30 days and Indonesia and Thailand at 15. Several of those exemptions require an ICAO-standard ePassport, and anyone outside the list applies for a short-term visa before travelling. Worth knowing before you fly
Japan's international tourist tax tripled to ¥3,000 per departure on 1 July 2026, collected inside your airline ticket. Tickets issued before that date keep the previous ¥1,000 rate.
Common questions
Do I need a visa for Japan?
It depends on your nationality. Japan has reciprocal visa-exemption arrangements with 74 countries and regions: most allow stays of up to 90 days for tourism, business or transit, while Brunei and Qatar are capped at 30 days and Indonesia and Thailand at 15. Some of those exemptions require an ICAO-standard ePassport, and anyone outside the list applies for a short-term visa before travelling. Register on Visit Japan Web at vjw-lp.digital.go.jp to generate your immigration and customs QR codes. JESTA, Japan's electronic travel authorisation, is scheduled to start in 2028. Check the official list on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs site, mofa.go.jp.
Is there a new departure tax when leaving Japan?
Yes. Japan's international tourist tax rose from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 per departure on 1 July 2026. It applies to everyone leaving Japan by air or sea, visitors and residents alike, and airlines collect it inside the ticket. Children under two and transit passengers staying under 24 hours are exempt.
How do I get from Haneda into central Tokyo?
The Keikyu Airport Line reaches Shinagawa in about 11 to 14 minutes for around ¥330, where you change to the Yamanote Line. The Tokyo Monorail runs to Hamamatsucho in roughly 13 to 18 minutes for around ¥520. Flat-rate taxis to central wards are about ¥7,600 to ¥9,100, with a late-night surcharge.
Should I fly into Haneda or Narita?
Haneda if your trip is Tokyo-centred: it sits about 15 km from Tokyo Station against Narita's 60-plus kilometres, and the train in costs a few hundred yen rather than a few thousand. Narita carries a wider spread of low-cost and long-haul carriers, since Haneda's slot limits cap how many international services it can take. Plenty of routes serve only one of the two, so check which airport your flight actually uses before booking a hotel.
