About Bangkok
Thai Airways bases its widebodies here, flying nonstop to London Heathrow, Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Milan, Brussels, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm, plus Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Air France, KLM, Finnair, British Airways, ITA Airways and EVA Air add their own European services; Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad and Turkish Airlines run the Gulf and Istanbul; Air Canada flies Vancouver.
The main terminal handles check-in, immigration and baggage for every flight, and SAT-1 is a boarding concourse only, so nothing is duplicated out there. Miracle and Coral lounges are spread across concourses A to G and inside SAT-1, and Emirates opened its largest lounge outside Dubai on SAT-1's fourth floor on 31 January 2025. Walking distances inside the building are long, so allow time.
Suvarnabhumi works as a Southeast Asian interchange as much as a destination. Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh are all inside three hours; Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei and Delhi run four to six. A third runway opened on 1 November 2024, lifting the airport from 68 to 94 movements an hour, and the long-haul departures cluster late in the evening and after midnight.
Bangkok rewards a stopover and a long stay equally. The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun sit along the Chao Phraya, and the river ferries are still the quickest way between them. Chatuchak's weekend market runs to thousands of stalls, Sukhumvit and Silom hold the rooftop bars and the malls, and the ruins at Ayutthaya are about an hour north by train.
Best time to visit
November to February, the cool dry season, with highs around 32°C. April is the hottest month and September the wettest.

Every foreign national entering Thailand must file the Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before arrival. The official form is free; sites charging a fee for it are not official.
Common questions
What is SAT-1 at Suvarnabhumi and how do you reach it?
SAT-1 is the midfield satellite concourse that opened progressively from September 2023, adding 28 gates, eight of them sized for the A380 and 747-8. It has no check-in and no immigration desks (those stay in the main terminal), so you clear departure formalities there, then ride the underground people mover, which takes about two minutes and runs around the clock.
How do you get from Suvarnabhumi into central Bangkok?
The Airport Rail Link City Line leaves from the terminal basement and reaches Phaya Thai in 26 minutes for 45 baht, with a BTS Skytrain interchange there and an MRT interchange at Makkasan. A metered public taxi takes 45 to 60 minutes and usually totals 250 to 400 baht, including the 50-baht airport surcharge and expressway tolls.
Does Thailand require anything to be filed before arrival?
Yes. Every foreign national arriving by air, land or sea must submit the Thailand Digital Arrival Card at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before arrival. It is free and replaced the paper arrival form from 1 May 2025. Visas are handled separately, through exemption lists, visa on arrival for a few countries, and the e-visa portal at thaievisa.go.th.
Is Suvarnabhumi the same airport as Don Mueang?
No. Bangkok has two airports, roughly 45 km apart. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) opened on 28 September 2006 and handles most full-service and long-haul flying. Don Mueang (DMK) is the older field, north of the city, and is used mainly by low-cost carriers. A free transfer bus links the two for passengers holding an onward boarding pass, taking around an hour.
