About Madrid
Barajas handled 68.2 million passengers in 2025, and Iberia serves roughly 110 destinations from it. The Latin American network is the point: more than three daily flights to Buenos Aires, plus Mexico City, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, San Juan and Santo Domingo, with Monterrey added on 2 June 2026. Air Europa, Plus Ultra and Iberojet fly much of the same map, and Iberia also serves Tokyo.
Iberia and its oneworld partners work out of Terminal 4 and its satellite, T4S, linked by a driverless underground people mover that takes about three minutes. T4S handles everything outside Schengen. The Iberia Premium Lounge Velázquez sits upstairs in T4S with runway views, a wine bar, showers and table dining, while the Dalí lounge covers Schengen departures from T4 itself.
Beyond Latin America the long-haul map is broad rather than deep. Iberia's A350 reaches Tokyo Narita, Cathay Pacific's Hong Kong nonstop steps up to daily on 25 October 2026, and Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul are each served nonstop. Emirates, Qatar Airways and Etihad run the Gulf routes, which puts most of Asia and Australasia within one stop, and Air Europa opened Madrid–Johannesburg with a 787 on 24 June 2026, its first sub-Saharan route.
Madrid earns its place when Latin America is on the itinerary, since connecting through Spain is usually shorter than backtracking via North America. It also works as a European base: high-speed AVE trains reach Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Málaga from Atocha and Chamartín, and Madrid charges no city tourist tax, unlike Barcelona or the Balearic Islands.
Best time to visit
Late April to early June, and mid-September through October. Madrid sits at 655 m on the central meseta, so July and August routinely reach 35 to 36C and touch 40C most years, and much of the city closes down in August. Winter is cold but bright, with around 2,800 hours of sunshine a year.

How do I get from Madrid airport to the city centre?
Metro Line 8 reaches Nuevos Ministerios in about 15 to 20 minutes for roughly EUR 4.50 to 5.00, which includes a EUR 3 airport supplement. Renfe Cercanías C-1 runs from T4 only, around EUR 2.60 and about 15 minutes to Chamartín. Taxis charge a fixed EUR 33 to anywhere inside the M-30 ring, any hour, with no surcharges.
How does connecting through Madrid T4 and T4S actually work?
Iberia and its oneworld partners use Terminal 4 and its satellite, T4S. T4 handles domestic and Schengen departures; T4S handles everything outside Schengen, including the Latin America long-haul. A driverless underground people mover links the two in about three minutes. T1, T2 and T3 sit roughly 2.5 km away and are reached by free shuttle bus, so allow real time if your itinerary crosses clusters.
Which airlines fly long-haul out of Madrid?
Iberia is the anchor, with A350s and A330s across Latin America, the US west coast and Tokyo Narita. American, Delta and United hold the North Atlantic alongside Air Europa, while Avianca and Aeroméxico add more of the Americas and Plus Ultra and Iberojet add Caribbean leisure routes.
