About Dubai
Emirates flies almost everything long-haul out of Dubai, reaching roughly 140 destinations in about 70 countries on the world's largest fleets of A380s and Boeing 777s. flydubai handles the shorter Gulf, Caucasus and East African runs from Terminals 2 and 3. Terminal 1 holds most of the rest: British Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Korean Air and dozens more.
Terminal 3 is one of the largest terminal buildings in the world, built for Emirates and split across Concourses A, B and C. Concourse A opened in 2013 as the first pier designed purely for the A380. Emirates runs business and first class lounges along the length of each concourse, with direct boarding from the Concourse A lounge, and lounges rotate through refurbishment. Terminal 1 has Ahlan, Marhaba, British Airways and Lufthansa lounges.
The point of Dubai is the bank structure. Waves of widebodies land and turn a few hours later, so Europe, Africa and South Asia feed into Southeast Asia and Australasia through a single terminal. Concourses A, B and C are linked airside by an automated train that takes fifteen to twenty minutes end to end, and Terminals 1 and 3 connect airside on foot.
Dubai is a city of set pieces. The Burj Khalifa and the fountains at Dubai Mall, the beach strip at Jumeirah, the Marina towers, the dhow wharfage and gold souks along the creek in Deira, and dunes about forty minutes inland. Al Fahidi's wind-tower lanes hold what is left of the old town. It works as a two-day stop between flights or as a full week.
Best time to visit
November to March, when daytime highs sit around 24 to 30°C and the evenings are comfortable outdoors. June to September pushes past 40°C with heavy humidity.

Worth knowing before you fly
Dubai has two international airports about 60 km apart. Connecting between Dubai International and Al Maktoum means clearing immigration, collecting bags and travelling by road, there is no airside link, so allow at least four hours.
Common questions
Which terminal do flights use at Dubai International?
Emirates uses Terminal 3, across Concourses A, B and C, and some flydubai flights leave from there too. Those carry four-digit flight numbers beginning with 1. The rest of flydubai uses Terminal 2, on the far side of the runways. Every other airline uses Terminal 1 and Concourse D.
How do you get from Dubai International into the city?
The Dubai Metro Red Line has its own stations at Terminal 1 and Terminal 3. Terminal 3 to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall is about 25 minutes and AED 5 on a Nol card. Trains stop running around midnight and start again at 5am, so overnight flights fall back on taxis, which cost about AED 60 into Downtown.
Is Dubai International the same airport as Al Maktoum?
No. Al Maktoum International (DWC) sits about 60 km away out towards Jebel Ali, and Dubai plans to shift operations there over the coming decade. There is no airside link between the two: a connection means clearing passport control, collecting bags and travelling by road, or by metro to Ibn Battuta and then a bus.
Does the United Arab Emirates require a visa to enter?
It depends on nationality. Citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council states need nothing, a long list of countries receives a visa on arrival, and everyone else applies in advance through the federal identity authority, Dubai's residency department or an airline.
