About Sydney
Terminal 1 is where the widebodies gather. Qantas flies nonstop to Los Angeles, Dallas Fort Worth, Vancouver, Johannesburg, Santiago and Bengaluru; Emirates runs three daily A380s to Dubai; Qatar Airways and Virgin Australia serve Doha; Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Scoot and Qantas cover Singapore; Cathay Pacific and Hong Kong Airlines take Hong Kong; Japan Airlines, ANA and Qantas fly Tokyo Haneda; United, Delta and American add Los Angeles.
T1's mezzanine holds the Qantas International First and Business lounges; Emirates, the Singapore Airlines SilverKris room, the SkyTeam lounge, a Centurion Lounge and two Plaza Premium rooms fill out the rest. Duty free was rebuilt around a designer precinct with Louis Vuitton and Cartier. Security screening has been re-equipped with newer scanners, and the arrivals hall sits above the International railway station.
Sydney is a three-runway airport hemmed in by an 11pm to 6am curfew and a cap on hourly movements, so its long-haul waves are tight: Asia and the Gulf push out late morning and late evening, North America across the middle of the day. Europe and the US east coast are one-stop propositions, usually through Singapore, the Gulf, Los Angeles or Auckland.
The city itself is built around the harbour: the Opera House and the bridge on one shore, ferries fanning out to Manly and Watsons Bay, and a chain of ocean beaches from Bondi south to Cronulla. Inland, the Blue Mountains are about two hours by train. Sydney's food scene runs from Cantonese in Haymarket to Lebanese in Punchbowl.
Best time to visit
September to November for spring warmth without midsummer humidity, and March to May for warm sea and settled light. December to February is hot and humid; June and July are the coolest and quietest.

Common questions
Which terminal do international flights use at Sydney Airport?
All scheduled international services use Terminal 1, on the north-western side of the field. Terminal 2 handles Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Rex domestic flights; Terminal 3 is Qantas domestic. A free shuttle links T1 with T2 and T3 every 15 minutes from 05:30 to 22:30 and takes about ten minutes, or the train covers the same hop in two.
How do you get from Sydney Airport into the city?
Airport Link trains leave from stations directly under the International and Domestic terminals, run roughly every ten minutes between 5am and midnight, and reach Central in about 13 minutes. An adult fare to the city stations is about A$21.64 off-peak, most of it the A$18.61 station access fee. Taxis from the ranks charge a fixed A$60.
Does Sydney Airport have a night curfew?
Yes. No aircraft may take off or land between 11pm and 6am, under a law that has applied since 1995. A narrow shoulder allows a small number of international landings between 5am and 6am, capped at five a day and 24 a week. That is why so many long-haul departures push out before 10pm.
What does Australia require before you fly in?
